Hair Loss and Physical Trauma

After experiencing a traumatic event or being under tremendous stress for a long period of time, some people will lose their hair. This type of trauma-induced hair loss is called telogen effluvium. A person may see large chunks of hair falling out at once with this disorder, but finding the root of the problem and addressing it will generally help to restore the hair follicles.

What causes telogen effluvium?

One of the most common causes of telogen effluvium is stress, usually resulting from a traumatic event, shock, or surgery. After experiencing a traumatic event such as a car accident, your body will do what it can to heal itself. This often means it will prioritize the injured area over all other parts of the body. If the car accident severely injured your leg, for example, your body will divert nutrients from your hair follicles to your leg to speed up the healing process. Therefore, you may notice your hair thinning or falling out because the follicles aren’t receiving the proteins they are used to. Your hair is of secondary priority while your leg heals. A few months after your leg heals, you should notice your hair growing back as normal.

Other causes of telogen effluvium range from menopause to childbirth to sudden weight loss. But the root of telogen effluvium is usually stress caused by whatever event or ailment produced it. Doctors recommend stress counseling or stress-reduction medications as well as vitamin supplements to your diet. Once the problem is addressed, most people see hair regrowth within 3-6 months of the causing stressor.
