Hair Replacements

Because hair loss is such a common phenomenon for both men and women worldwide, people have turned to a wide variety of solutions to manage it. Some people adapt their diet by eating more protein- and biotin-rich foods. Some people try topical treatment such as hair loss shampoos, such as Alpecin. But many people resort to a more dramatic and expensive solution: Hair Replacements.

How Do They Work?

During a hair transplant, the doctor will take a section of thicker hair from your scalp or another part of your body and graft it onto the balding part of your scalp. This will usually be done using “plugs” of hair, which are tufts, or larger grafts of hair and skin. Since 1939, when the first hair transplant procedure was performed, doctors have refined the practice. However, there are still aspects of the procedure that many patients consider to be imperfect.

Because hair transplants oftentimes move your own hair around to thinning parts of your scalp, that hair can still thin over time, as well. While hair transplants generally provide the appearance of a thicker, fuller head of hair, no doctor can guarantee that it will not start to thin out eventually. Because of this, some patients opt for synthetic hair that will not fall out as they get older. One example of this is Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. After experiencing a botched hair transplant surgery, he used synthetic strands in his second surgery.

How Much Do They Cost?

Hair transplants can be expensive, depending on the complexity of the procedure and how much hair needs to be transplanted. Healthline estimates that hair transplants can cost between $4,000 to $15,000 per session. Depending on the nature of your unique procedure, you may require additional sessions. And because this is considered a cosmetic procedure, health insurance will not cover it.
